What is an online impostor game?
It is the Impostor Word Game played inside the game itself. Everyone gets the same secret word, except the impostor, who only gets a hint. Players take turns writing one clue on a shared board, and chat while they play. Then everyone votes for the player they think is the impostor. There is no voice or video, and nothing has to be said out loud. Share your code and anyone who has it can join.

Start a game
Start a game and share the code. Anyone with the code can join. The game starts when the lobby clock runs out, with at least 3 players.

Get your word
Most players see the secret word. One player is the impostor and sees only a hint.

Write one clue
Take turns writing one clue on the board. Show that you know the word without giving it away. There is a chat for everything else.

Vote
Read the board and vote for the impostor. Then the game goes back to the lobby for the next round.
FAQ
How is an online game different from the classic game?
In the classic game everyone gets the secret word on their own screen, and then the clues and the vote happen out loud, in a room or on a call. In an online game the clues, the chat and the vote all happen inside the game. An online game also runs on its own: the lobby, the vote and the results each have a clock.
How many players do you need?
At least 3, and up to 20. If the lobby clock runs out with fewer than 3 players, the game closes.
Is it free?
Yes. No payment, no sign-up and no account. Pick a name and play.
Is there an app to download?
No. It runs in your phone's browser, on iPhone and Android, with nothing to install.
Can I play on one phone?
Not in an online game, where everyone plays on their own screen. For one phone, create a game in the Impostor Word Game and pick Pass the Phone in the lobby.
Can I play with people I have never met?
Not at the moment. No game is listed anywhere, so only the people you send your code to can join. Games open to anyone may come back later.
Can I join a game that is already playing?
Not in the middle of a round. You can wait for its next round and join as soon as the current one ends.
Who can join my game?
Anyone you give the code to, and nobody else. Nothing is listed publicly, so your game cannot be found by browsing.
